Your tutorial blog posts gives all your students one way to access all the current concepts you are teaching, concepts you have taught for review, and for your accelerated students the ability to start learning about concepts that are coming up. Essentially you will have a library of tutorials ready for your students to get the content they need. This gives you the freedom to pinpoint and help individual students with their individual needs.
This was a great video. As a fifth grade teacher I am having a hard time with students having internet sources outside of the classroom to do pre video lessons and respones. I do love projects where I give students time to research and teach materials to their fellow classmates. We are trying to infuse more of the flipping concepts in our class. Best of luck to my fellow educators.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful concept. Of course, if the students come to the class prepared with prior knowledge, we can spend time applying the skills instead of the vast reviews we do now. But getting the students to work on their own to introduce themselves to the subject is the problem. This would be a great paradigm shift for many of our students. However, if we can move them along towards that point, their academics would grow by leaps and bounds.
ReplyDeleteI do realize that many students do not have internet access at home. However, many do. Those that do have that opportunity to use a tool that will ready them for what they will do in the classroom. Those that don't should be given time at the beginning of the school day to look at the postings while getting the others started on the relevant activities that go along with the blog postings. Your postings of past concepts will also be used for those students that might need additional help during the day. I must say that if it is not tryed at all it will NEVER work. I think you will be suprised how many students will be able to do this via the internet and via their phones. BTW with some of the tools that I sent via email you could also do the same via phone. If you recorded your lessons on a DVD they could play them on a computer without internet or DVD player...so there are many options that could level the playing field for those that do not have internet access.
ReplyDeleteThis video about flipping was real nice to see how it work. We do know some of our kids do not have internet at home. Student who have internet will be able to have concepts and knowledge for work that day. Flipping will help other students get the help they need to. Anything that helps in our classroom is a plus for all students.
ReplyDeleteMany times are students do not realize that they have internet access through their phones; or rather they do not think of the phone when internet is questioned.
ReplyDeleteThis flipping is a great idea. Many students access to the Internet though the public liberty, here at school and may be at friend’s house. Yes, we can make dvds, mp3 or pod cast, but will the students listen or watch.
ReplyDeleteFlipping is such a great tool to try and use in every classroom, everyday. Many students use the internet one way or another and enjoy doing so on a daily basis. I also think flipping is teaching our students responsibility this will give students a chance to be " grown up" and take some responsibility for their knowledge and for their own success. Having something like this for students to access will only give them the ability to be MORE prepared for daily lessons and to feel MORE accomplished with themselves.
ReplyDeleteMy question is whether the videos are teacher made or are they pre-made examples of a concept? If a teacher is to flip a class, I think that it takes lots of pre-planning and would be difficult to start say in the middle of the year as the method of teaching. I say that especially if the concepts to be taught have to be teacher made. I also think that media access needs to be arranged for students that do not have internet or even access to a library. In addition, the concept needs to be fully explained to students and parents before it begins. Otherwise, I think that it is an awesome idea with great merit.
ReplyDeletePre-loading students with information has been a desire of mine since the beginning of school. Sometimes it's possible send them home with information, other times it is a real challenge. I think that the focus on properly reaching the needs of each student, whether accelerated, moderate or challenged can be properly addressed with this 'flipping' method.
