Khan Academy Tutoring Tool!

  1. This is Jan Oliver @ Keisha's house. We looked at the video. It looks like the students are grateful to the teachers for making math come to live. It appears that the students are appreciative of the teachers and vise versa.

  2. Every teacher should require all students to use these videos as homework "buddies." My.son used the linear equations video and "swears " the guy is a genius :)

  3. This guy is amazing! He is able to communicate his concepts in a way that make me, as a teacher, say to myself, "Wow, that is so much easier!" I wish I would have known about this in college during some of my courses.

  4. Thanks for the reminder about this great site! Ms. Rocha had first introduced it to me, but it has slipped my mind and now I'm really seeing it's potential!

  5. This site is definitely on my top sites. I use this site very often in class, especially in difficult areas such as electron configuration and balancing chemical equations. They do an awesome job on breaking it down simply for the students to grasp the concepts more easily.

  6. I hear many people saying "Wow, Kahn Academy explains this so much better than any teacher Ive had," but Ive seen his math videos and they really arent any better than what a good teacher would present in a lecture.

The difference is that people who approach Kahn Academy do so in the mindset of "I want to learn this" which is more than half the battle in learning anything, and many students in the classroom do not have this attitude in class. Theres not much special about Kahn's approach or the new technology he presents with, you could get the same information from a textbook.

It is the motivation and genuine desire to learn that matters, if you approach learning something from that angle it becomes much easier.

  8. I remember the khan academy from a post Mr. Kelsey had in his blog. This is a great tool for students who did not grasp concepts in class to catch up.

  9. I'm glad this site is getting out to more and more teachers. It has been helpful to many of my students as well as their parents. Having another resource explaining a concept in a different way is definitely something every student and teacher should utilize.

  10. I first heard about the Khan Academy when I went to Region 20. It was a resource I was looking at for an assignment that was given to us in the class. He explains things so eloquently and with such great detail.

  11. Where the Khan Academy achieves is explaining a concept in a interesting, concise and manageable fashion. A general humor keeps the viewer at ease. It's a great tool to help students refresh themselves on previous concepts and could also be used as part of an overall lesson. The question still remains of how we use this technique in our classrooms. We should make the students feel comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone.

  12. I agree again with Mr. Kelsey. Student go in with a mindset that they want to learn something. I want my students to do more than just learn something, I want them to be passionate about their education. After all they are my future. Without them we will have nothing. So it is important to give them all of us. To show them what we offer and ask them to make something anew from it.

  13. If this would have been done when I was in school, I may have been more math savvy.

  15. I understand that a good math teacher can teach the same way that Khan Academy does. Sometimes, however, students just need to hear the information or see the information from another source.

  16. I use this site repeatedly and not just for Biology concepts. It helps me develop new ways to improve the way I explain Biology concepts to my students.

  17. I agree a lot with Mr. Mortis. I have watched his videos for use with students and a couple may be relevant as review of content already taught, but are not always helpful with initial instruction. I have watched some of his videos for reminders on concepts (not just math) which I haven't used in a while and found the explanation was not as in depth or clearly explained as it could have been.

Good site none-the-less, but you need to watch the videos first, not just push them on your studnets as the way to teach them. Maybe the inspiration we need to create our own videos and become the better Khan.

  18. I will be taking a look to see what will work with our kids. Good idea. I heard about it on National Public Radio but I have to admit I didn't follow it up.
