THe Times They are a Changin'!!!!

  1. This is such a true video and the irony of the song as still relevant is great. I read a study a few weeks ago on the integration of computers and the internet and it was astonishing how much resistance there still was by teachers accepting it as a norm, not to mention a teaching tool. Now here we are trying to blog, use cell phone apps, you tube, the many resources you posted on before, clicker systems, ENO and on and on.

I tell students everyday that they need to trust me, they need to learn the content I'm teaching because they will need it in the future to be successful. It is not always specifically used, but may give them the prior knowledge needed for understanding another task, not to mention how to better problem solve. I cannot warn teachers enough, you don't have to learn all the technology, but PLEASE at least explore it and try to integrate some of it. You will be surprised how much of it will become more useful to your classroom if you practice & play.

I get 3 things from this:
    1) I understand a little better where students are coming from and remain "hip" I guess with regard to why they are bored and the programs they find fun and useful.

2)I understand the lingo at conferences and always have software, websites and tech in the back of mind to recommend to others.

    3) Keeping it in the back of my head also helps me in the future, along with my exploration and understanding of the programs. For instance I have played with the ENO Board program RM Easiteach for 4 years now. I always looked at it as an amped powerpoint but just this year after learning about jingproject from the book review we did as a staff I have learned to use Easiteach to create pics, vids and tutorials for classes.

  2. I love the quote at the end by John Cotton Dana. It is so easy to get stuck in a rut when teaching, the best thing to do is continue learning.

  3. It's been a remarkable change in such a short period of time. Truly amazing that so many people are behind the times and are falling further as technology advances at an ever increasing rate.

  4. We live in an increasingly complex and changing world. We must adapt to the newly developing paradigm of education by communication to students in a way that is acceptable to students.

  6. Times are changing and have been for a long time I was a child of the artari and the computer filled a room era. Changing time this is true but in order to proceed into the future I think our children need to understand the past and how it relates to them today. How their contribution to society is going to make changes in their world and the future of those behind them. I liked this The Times They are A Changin'!!!!! I must say they are changing for the better in many facets.

  7. The times are changing. Computers go faster now. Computers in the past had a five-inch floppy disk. Chalk boards have now turned into white boards. We have smart boards that have replaced projectors. With all this new technology, teachers classroom work can go a little bit faster. It is also easier to grade and return work faster. We will see our classroom turn into a greater wealth of information in
    21st century.

  8. When I was younger, I found myself in such awe of those who had lived to see the inventions of flight, the car and the fall of our economy. I asked so many questions and then went on to ask what it was like to go from the invention of flight to seeing the first man walk on the moon. I remember when call waiting, Velcro and microwave ovens were the new technology. I was so surprised at as a teenager about how upset my father was over call waiting. He refused to even use it and would simply hang up if put on hold. I remember when my youngest son ran up to me with an LP (for those of you who don't know that's a record made of vinyl) and asked where he was suppose to put the big CD in computer. I suppose I am one of the lucky ones. I was raised around the time this song came out and it was a great time of change. I have not only witnessed the birth of many technical advances but have had a chance to learn them through my eyes and the eyes of my children. In some cases it seemed forced simply because my kids had to know things and my employer wanted all the files moved to a hard drive. Sure I know 5 STAR, dot matrix and Q Base. All dead technology. But with death comes rebirth. All things carry purpose in life and the new and unknown is out there waiting for us all. I welcome it to my door wishing I was a little more prepared or more talented at it quite a bit of it. But I am here to learn as well. And through the kids eyes and the things they can do, these old eyes still hold purpose for them. They too know the past holds purpose because without the lessons already learned it is harder to move forward. I know the times will change. With them will come opportunities that may escape me or that I may not even see. It is a shame that with better technology there comes a higher price tag. One day the world will have the most advanced systems and gaggawats, and symbolins and even maybe a ziptafone. What do i know? I know that to resist change is futile. I am also happy to report that although my father will still hang up if he is put on hold due to call waiting, he emails me every day and can answer a text message.
